The Benefits of VoLTE for Wireless Customers

Voice over LTE, or VoLTE for short, is a new technology in the wireless world that allows voice calls to be made over a 4G LTE network. 4G LTE networks were initially used for downloading, streaming, and web browsing, but with VoLTE these networks can now be used to improve phone calls. Here’s how VoLTE can benefit both consumers and business users alike.

Higher quality phone calls

The biggest benefit of VoLTE is that the quality of phone calls is far superior to calls made on 3G or 2G networks, as more data can be transferred over 4G. To be precise, 4G networks can transfer up to three times as much data as 3G networks. This makes it much easier to make out what the person on the other end of the call is saying, and improves the overall clarity of tone, essentially making VoLTE an HD voice call.

Better coverage and connectivity

In addition to providing higher quality voice calls, VoLTE can also connect calls up to twice as fast as ordinary wireless voice call services. Additionally, since 2G and 3G networks are still available when there is no 4G signal, this means that VoLTE provides greater mobile coverage overall.
While 2G and 3G services are likely to remain, they would definitely not be as necessary as they are now. In fact, much of the spectrum used for 2G in particular could potentially be repurposed to increase capacity on 4G networks.

Longer battery life

Currently, when you use your phone to make phone calls, your phone has to switch from a 4G network to 2G or 3G. This is because voice calls are not supported on 4G networks for most phones. All of this switching back and forth requires your phone to search for a new mobile signal each time, which can take a toll on your phone’s battery life. With VoLTE, your phone will not need to switch between networks, allowing you to significantly save on battery power.

Video calls

With VoLTE, you are also able to make video calls over 4G LTE networks. This feature will essentially make apps like Skype for Business obsolete on mobile devices, since users will be able to make video calls to anyone else with VoLTE simply by using their mobile number. As a result, users will no longer have to rely on separate accounts and various apps for video calls and voice calls.

You may have also noticed that video call services like Skype and Google Hangouts have better audio quality than most voice call services. This is because, much like VoLTE, these services use a lot of data as part of a Voice over IP (VoIP) system. With VoLTE, both your voice calls and video calls will have this same quality.
